CLUB MEETING 16th MAY 2016
PRESIDENT CHRIS SUTTON: welcomed members and guests Margo Sherwill our guest speaker and John Hammond visiting Rotarian from R.C. Shepparton South.
  • Family update: Scott heading home from working with construction company building Bunnings store in Orange, Jordan on placement as a third year student teacher.
  • Visited the Marilyn Munro Exhibition in Bendigo.
  • Reminder next Board Meeting to consider Vocational and Community Service Awards, please get nominations in, time for Annual Report with directors urged to email reports to John.
  • Presentation of a R.I. pin to John Watson for sponsoring a new member, Steve Mills.
  • Sam Bailey Breakfast, 127 tickets sold. Rotarians will be assisting with breakfast but need to book and possibly arrange a table to sit down and hear Sam.
  • Attending Tocumwal Rotary Club tomorrow for dinner with Regional Volunteer Chairperson for RAWCS.

Spending time with family with a Grandma Sleepover with grandchildren.
Year 9 teacher, now in 38th year as a teacher, still gets 'buzz' always learning new subjects, new curriculum and technology advances.
 
GUEST SPEAKER:

Margo Sherwill

Member Rotary Club of Benalla, on District Youth Exchange Committee, retired Primary School Principal with passion for literacy and numeracy.
Benalla Rotary Club in involved in the Wake & Shine School in Samthar, India, next to Nepal and Himalayan Mountains.
Lush country-side. Since 2005 R.C. Benalla has been involved with the Wake and Shine School.
Government schools have 60 in classes under appalling conditions, with limited resources.
Wake & Shine School, set up by a retired army General. Classroom bright and cheery, computers, books, uniforms.
Maximum 25 in class. Teachers no formal training, teach by rote.
Benalla R.C. assisted school with sponsorship and other projects such as water harvesting, installing tanks to provide drinking water.
52 of 142 students sponsored by Benalla Rotary Club.
Margo took on project to write and print Readers for the students.
Aim of Readers to:
  • Present English in captivating manner.
  • Demonstrate correct grammar.
  • Introduce English sounds and key vocabulary systematically.
  • Ensure it is easy for un-trained teachers to implement.
Margo has written and taken photos for the printing of the Readers.
Completed 25 graded books for 5 year olds, 40 books for 6, 40 books for 7 and 40 books for 8 year olds.
Each set has a large demonstration book for the teacher and a set of small books for the students.
Teacher must complete one book per week.
Have completed 89 books, 56 to go.

  • $250 cheque from St Josephs Fun Run for marshalling.

May is Bowl Cancer Month - test yourself with kit available from pharmacies.

Annual reports from directors required for the Club's Annual Report. Directors please email report.
 
P.P. KATE HODGE:
Letter from Omoja Orphanage thanking club for support. Opening in July with first intake of orphans.
Zoe back in Germany immersed in school life.
 
JASON ANDREW:
Application for National Youth Science Forum received from St Mary's student Michelle Wood from Katamatite. Closing date 31st May.
 
JEFF BUZZA:
Dyson's IGA opening planning a BBQ to support Pip Cowan similar to that organised by Home Hardware with Rotary assistance.
 
P.P. LOU HAMON:
Next week's meeting will be at the Numurkah Community Learning Centre, 99 Melville Street, for a hands on practical session on Club Runner and Website.
NCLC have 12 laptop computers for our use, those members with a laptop with internet access please bring along.
Those members proficient with Club Runner please attend to act as mentors for the other club members.
It will be a Pizza meal with BYO drinks.
 
P.P. ALLEN CANOBIE:
Rotary Down Under have had recent articles and letters re protocols and procedures in clubs.
Message is that clubs should adapt to changing times.
 
P.P. MARK McNAMARA:
Rotary Health will support RSL and Army in project to assist soldiers with Post Traumatic Stress Disorders.

Sharyn Griffiths reported 26 in attendance giving a percentage of 78.79%.
