CLUB MEETING 18th JULY 2016

Minutes of Rotary – 18th July 2016
Chairman & Grace – Linda Boyd
President – John Watson
Introducing of guests – Duncan McPherson & Stephen Visser – Committee on Movies at Numurkah

Linda Boyd – All 4 of her children now married, eldest son took some time to make the plunge - 3 children & 10 years to marry in Noosa. Usually family weddings are not without an incident – the 1st wedding was fine, 2nd wedding in Perth when Husband walked through a glass plate door, 3rd wedding when she wrote a poem & at the last one she sang an Australian Folk Song & the next day Leon was chasing grandchildren & broke a toe.  Employment still casual at the gym & also have gone back to PALS which she is enjoying.

Guest Speakers – Duncan McPherson & Stephen Vissar introduced the idea of getting movies back into the town hall in Numurkah. They have a small committee consisting of Barb Sinclair, Donna Mangles & themselves. Their intention is to try & get enthusiasm to see what is necessary to work out what is needed to achieve these goals. They have realised they need to form a society of their own to raise money for the purchase of equipment that is necessary. It is to be a not for profit organisation with decisions to be made by the committee. They anticipate running 11 movies per year with funding to come from membership of $35 singles $50 for families to cater for seniors & kids films. Expressions of interest have been left with businesses in town with 300 people so far declaring their support. Town Hall committee are very supportive of the idea as any other institution that hires the hall with have the ability to show movies & use the surround sound. Schools are very keen for this to happen. They anticipated the cost to purchase the equipment to be around $80,000 - $100,000 but they think they have sourced a fellow who can source the equipment for $30,000 - $40,000. Once quotes are to hand they can expect to get the idea off the ground. Hoping for support from various groups & when they get up & running the Film society will have a viewing for members as the cost of running a movie to the public can be very expensive. They will be looking for funds & assistance in running events with drinks & food to be provided. In the past Numurkah had a population of 2000 people  & we had a picture theatre now, we have over 4000 & no picture theatre. It would be a good avenue for to kids. They are currently attached to Love our Lifestyle in the short term until the society gets up & running & stands by itself. The existing screen needs replacing as done the surround sound & projector – it all needs to be digital & upgraded. There are 150 seats upstairs, maybe bean bags or open area downstairs to lay on the floor etc. To hire a movie that the society can watch is quite cheap, if you want to open it to the public the rights cost $500 or $600.

President – John Watson. There is an invitation from Shep Rotary Club who are having a combined dinner for fine food at Shep Bocci Club 30th August 6.30pm $25/per person, partners welcome. Interested parties to contact John Watson. 4 way test where did it orginate from? Answer - Herbert J Taylor who later became Chairman of Rotary International – It is a 24 word code of ethics for business and professional lives

Secretary Report – Phil Meagher - Absent

Director’s reports – Kate Hodge (on behalf of Director – Julie Andrew) Some excited movement at Umoja orphanage. A big mining company Titanium Mining has built cots, beds, tables, & now the first house is finished for the first 10 kids. Next thing is they have purchased a bull, the cows are in calf, the goats have been having kids. Today they are getting 350 chooks to go into the shed. Most exciting news is that Cathy Booth is over there at the moment with Social Service people to pick the kids for the first home & she has elected to stay for another week to help source the kids in most need. First 10 kids will be in the home by the end of the week.

Sieg Sieter proposes an Advent Calendar – 24 days before Christmas. We sell the calendar’s at a price when your number comes up we draw the lucky prizes. There will hopefully be 96 prizes for the public to win. The picture will be something significant to Numurkah, perhaps the Numurkah Mob with feature. The calendar already has 6 sponsors who have committed to cover the cost of printing. The sponsors will give 10% discount for up to 31st March to honour the discount. 2 business people gave Sieg vouchers to support the calendar just by talking to them. It won’t be hard to make at least $3,000 - $4,000 with just a little bit of effort. Needs support from the Rotary Club Committee for the idea, working on $5.00 for the calendar, we would just need to glue them together after they have been printed. It needs to be finalised before end of August for printers.  Do we need a permit to run this? Committee to work up a proposal to discuss with the Board.

Lorraine Greenwood – Request for a change for chairperson for next week as her guest speaker is currently away. June Hewson to now be chairperson next week. 24th July is Rotary Friendship Exchange Lunch in Benalla, a couple of groups are getting organised for a trip to India & America in case anyone is interested. Chris Sutton & Lorraine Greenwood will represent us at the meeting.

Chris Sutton – Updating flyer for membership for information centre & Shire etc. Request from Soup Kitchen for moving barbeque on 1st & 3rd Wednesdays of the month for moving, need someone for 3rd August & 17th August. Picking it up 5.00pm & bringing it back at 6.00pm.

Fellowship report – Gary Fisher – Absent

Attendance report – Bill Hewson – Attendance percentage 76%.

Heads & Tails – Duncan McPherson

London Calling.
Hi from London, thanks to Jennifer for the report on the meeting.
Having a great time, small group of 10, half of whom I have travelled with before.
In free time seen fantastic views of London from the London Eye, watched changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace and the Horse Guard. Visited Churchill's War Rooms, the underground bunker he and cabinet and chiefs of staff conducted the war.
With the tour visited Victoria & Albert Museum, and Royal Academy of Arts, been to Australia Ballet performing Swan Lake to a standing ovation, Cinderella on Wednesday.
Been to a BBC Proms concert at Royal Albert Hall, with another tonight.
Weather has been fine and hot. Up till today it has ranged from 24 to 26, today's forecast 34!
Back home on Sunday,
Lou.
