GOULBURN VALLEY MAJOR ART EXHIBITION

The Goulburn Valley’s major art exhibition is being mounted in the Numurkah Town Hall by the Rotary Club of Numurkah from March 7th to 10th.
Now in its 34th year the exhibition is hailed as the biggest art show on the Goulburn Valley’s art calendar. With prize money of $7600 offered, chairman of the organising committee Lou Hamon said the organisers were encouraged by the entries received from local artists as well as throughout Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia and Queensland.
Entries include traditional landscape, still life and modern styles in all mediums.
The major sponsor is Diverse Builders for the $1500 Painting Award, with a further $2,900 over six awards, these awards are acquisitive with the sponsors selecting their own paintings.

The judge, Ern Trembath will select the Best In Show Award valued at $1500 plus the runner-up $500 award and 4 Highly Commended Awards in Watercolour, Oil, Pastel and Regional Artist, each valued at $200, these awards are non-acquisitive, and are also eligible for a sponsors  award, or purchase.

Since its inception in 1981 the exhibition has raised over $200,000 for local charities. The proceeds from this year’s exhibition will go towards the establishment of a dental clinic in the rebuilding of the Numurkah Hospital, following the devastating flood of 2012.

The official opening by Hon. Wendy Lovell MP will take place on Friday evening, with a wine and cheese tasting courtesy Monichino Winery, and Locheilan Farm House Cheese, with musical entertainment provided by Alistair Davey prior to the official opening. Following the official opening the judges will announce the winners in the various sections, and supper will be provided.

This year the craft section is featuring a "Teddy Bear Award" any medium. It is anticipated this award will open the exhibition to many new entrants for the first time, young and old, experienced or non-experienced in exhibiting. The display of the entries in the "Teddy Bear Award" should also generate much interest from the viewing public.

Once again patrons are being asked to try themselves as judges and to cast their vote for the People’s Choice Award, for best exhibit in the Exhibition. This Award has proved popular since its introduction, with $100 prize awarded to the winning artist.

In conjunction with the Art & Craft Exhibition the Rotary Club is conducting a raffle of a painted “Lone Gum” donated by this year’s judge, Ern Trembath. Valued at $1,250 the oil painting was donated by Ern Trembath to the Rotary Club to assist in raising funds for the hospital rebuild after the devastating floods in 2012.
Tickets can be purchased from any Rotarian, or at the door of the exhibition. The winner will be drawn at 4 pm on Monday 10th at the conclusion of the exhibition, with winner published in the Numurkah Leader on Wednesday 12th March.

This year the display stands have been refurbished changing from a beige backing to black, necessitating the frames themselves also be painted black, and an experiment with the introduction of LED lighting to supplement the halogen lighting. Both these improvements should assists patrons to view and appreciate the exhibits.

Admission for the opening night is $8, which includes supper, with patrons charged $5 for the remainder of the exhibition. Admission prices include a copy of the catalogue of the works on display.
