CLUB MEETING 24th OCTOBER 2022

PRESIDENT REX SHIELDS welcomed members and guest Wilma Crowther.

 

PRESIDENT'S REPORT:

 
  • Five injured bike riders after incident at Strathmerton. One in hospital, others bruised.
  • Guest Speaker Clive Deetlefs from GrainCorp unable to attend due to flood situation.
  • Rotary members volunteered to assist with sandbagging at Kaarimba Hall. With 70 volunteers in attendance used BBQ to feed tea Tuesday, lunch & tea Wednesday and Thursday lunch. Proceeds from Show Us Your Wheels BBQ used to cover cost. Over 10,000 sandbags filled.
 
CHAIR: P.P. GEOF HOLMES>
Rain interfering with antenna installations. Assisted with excavator building flood levees.
 
Visited dentist who filled mouth and emptied pockets.
 
 
GUEST SPEAKER: GARRY McNAMARA.
 

Rotarian Garry McNamara was guest speaker, filling in at the last minute when scheduled guest speaker was unable to attend due to floods.

Garry previously spoke to the club about his army service, this time speaking about being a jockey.

Prior to army, wanted to be a jockey, left school early for a job at Deloraine Racecourse stables. First job was cleaning the boxes. Apprenticed as a jockey, then called up for National Service.

Returning to Ulverstone stables, riding and breaking horses in. After marriage moved to Ballarat, then a stud farm learning about breeding horses.

Moved to Brisbane and joined the army.

 

REPORTS

SECRETARY JENNIFER RODGER:

  • Food safety inspection of BBQ this Thursday.
  • Call for nominations for District Governor 2015-26.
 
P.P. STEPHEN MILLS:
 
Advised club that the club paid for the food for three days at the Kaarimba Hall feeding those filling sandbags. Approximately $600 used from the proceeds from the Show Us Your Wheels BBQ. Service strengthened relationships.
 
MICHELLE SQUISH DAVIS:
 
Still places to be filled on Open Gardens weekend roster.
In light of rain and flood situation discussion on continuing or postponing. Leave till end of week to assess the situation and confer with the garden owners.
 
A.G. LORRAINE GREENWOOD:
 
National Youth Science Forum interviews conducted. Caliber of applicants was very impressive.
 
Next year's District Conference cancelled but a fun social weekend being planned.
 
Volunteers required at International Conference as greeters at airport.
 
Polio film fund raiser to be organised for December in Cobram Community Cinema.
 
 
MICHELLE SQUISH DAVIS:
 
With so much bad talk about the younger generation, urged to acknowledge at the sand bagging at Kaarima the younger generation from Waaia Football and Netball club plus Baulkamaugh Scouts for their outstanding efforts.
 
 
PRESIDENT REX SHIELD:
 
Next week on Melbourne Cup eve, regular meeting will be a social evening in the Maple Crescent Park.
 
Fines session raised $180 for Polio Plus.
