MEMBERSHIP - RECUITEMENT & RETENTION

Wide ranging discussion took place. Points raised.

  • Personal approach, backed by advertising and promotion also with social media.
  • Inward Looking. Members to consider what the club means to them, what the club stands for, what we get out of it and what we want to achieve.
  • Be welcoming and generous to new members.
  • Mentoring of new members, on an ongoing basis, not just the first few weeks.
  • Different things work for different people.
  • Relevance in community, and is it conveyed to public.
  • Younger members required.
  • Follow-up with contact with members not present tonight.
  • Fire-side chats with new members with not too much pressure on new members to fill roles.
  • Look at structure. Might be alright for current members but is it appealing to new members.
  • More social meetings.
  • Draw up list of prospective members to be approached. Approached by close contacts.
  • Mindful of gender/ cultural balance.
  • Health Check survey may highlight what issues need to be addressed.
  • Our values to be articulated to others.

TO END WITH A SMILE

When I overheard one of my cashiers tell a customer, "We haven't had it for a while, and I doubt we'll be getting it soon," I quickly assured the customer that we would have whatever it was she wanted by next week. After she left, I read the cashier the riot act.

"Never tell the customer that we're out of anything. Tell them we'll have it next week," I instructed her. "Now, what did she want?"

"Rain."
