CLUB MEETING 15th APRIL 2019

Meeting opened by President Steve Mills @ 6.30pm

Introduced guests – Graham Cocks, Thang Danh

Chairman – John Watson

Apologies – Jason & Julie Andrew, Grant Deppler, Lou Hamon & Ernest Jones

President Steve Mills – Thanks to Phil Ashton for co-ordinating sales of Sue Alberti’s book. Volunteers are required to assist the CFA’s Good Friday Appeal, Anzac Day barbeque for dawn service, Lorraine Greenwood to seek volunteers. Only 7 meetings for the rest of this presidential year. Nominations are sought for Club Awards for Community & Vocational Service. Please be prompt with Director’s reports in advance for preparation of end of year reports. Inspirational story – Jacqui Phillips talked at Probus & did a great job at selling the amalgamation of the 3 hospitals.

Chairman – Sally Rose. Filling in a Chairman in replacement of Grant Deppler. Her current passion is patchworking, scrap booking & gardening – its all about cut & paste. Shared a personal story of her daughter losing her paternal grandmother to bowel cancer. It is generally a curable disease if diagnosed early.

Guest Speaker – Graham Cocks (Bright Rotary Club)
Congratulations to Numurkah for taking on Bowel Cancer Awareness for month of May. Screening tests detect any traces of blood you can’t see. If you see blood, go to your Doctor. Program started in 1981 in Lismore Rotary Club, Graham is the district co-ordinator. 31 clubs in the district are involved, 49 townships & suburbs consist of mostly country clubs. He became a district program in 2008/2009 prior to that only 3 clubs were involved in the district, 14 the next year, now up to 31. Rotary scheme 50% of sales are within age of 50-75 price range which is generally covered by Govt scheme. He suggests scans be done every 12 months rather than every 2 years. 41% return rate on Govt scheme – the aim is to reach 60%. 90% chance of bowel cancer can be cured if detected early. Program is encouraged to utilise pharmacies to sell the scans. Sally Rose to be the club co-ordinator. Club provides the kits to the pharmacy, club collects $1 for each scan sold. Kits only have a 2 year lifespan – check useby dates, sell the older ones first. Kits can be purchased for $18.00 via internet, but in May we are selling for $15.00 each. 4,000 die each year from bowel scan, second to lung cancer. Awareness month is May, price through pharmacy $35-$40. Samples to be put in an envelope & mailed off for testing. Results of testing to be provided to clubs when completed.  Suggest an ad to go into local paper to advertise we have these scans available. Reminder letters sent to all participants each year to remind them to test.

Secretary’s Report – Jennifer Rodger – thank you letter from Shire of Moira for club’s assistance at the Numurkah Tyre Celebration which was very successful, wreath organised for ANZAC Day service.

John Watson – Community Awards for change over at end of June – Vocational awards Mantra - service through vocational service. The aim is recognising someone in the community who has done something special in their vocation.

Lorraine Greenwood – Community Service – lots of bbq’s coming up. New members to perhaps become involved & be the face of Rotary. Good Friday appeal, Fire Brigade to do door knocking to collect funds. RSL Dawn Breakfast 6.00am. Clearance Sale for Maurice McNamara & Co on 04/05/19 – Saturday 9.00am – early afternoon.  President’s Citation application being completed, & hopefully the Club will receive a Platinum Citation if all goes to plan. Fundraising event for Polio Plus Focus, banners etc at McNamara’s clearance sale. Official launch of kiosk on 10/05/19 & again at RSL for 18/05/19 for the election. Sieg’s function on Sat night last for Save the Koalas’ project which was successful almost 100 people, close to $2,500 raised. Rotarian Action Group has been joined by Lorraine, another tick for citation.
