CLUB BULLETIN 25th MAY 2020

MEMBERS ISOLATED THOUGHTS
SALLY ROSE
Pandemic, what pandemic?  Only four months ago we were updating our Pandemic Plan and laughing because it certainly wasn’t going to be used in my lifetime. Well, as they say don’t count your eggs …. The interesting thing for me has been that Council’s role (GSCC where I work and other Local Governments across the state) is to repeat and reinforce the guidelines set out by State and Federal governments. This becomes challenging when they are inconsistent, contradictory or just plain confusing. Council has developed its own website with links to the services, agencies and operations working with our community during the pandemic. My role is in maintaining contact with various groups and ensuring that where we find a need, we find someone who can address that need. Sometimes it is council, as often as not it is another agency or group. As we move into recovery, I believe a consistent message will be “help yourself, help your family, help your neighbour”. I think this is consistent with Rotary’s philosophy that the whole community is your neighbour. Covid19 is forever, but the restrictions are not. Stick with in and we will all benefit.
My personal three wishes for when this is ‘over’ are to hug my daughter, sit in a coffee shop and read my book and hug my daughter again. Covid19 has made me appreciate some of the simpler things in life.

‘Lock Down’ hasn’t had a great impact on the farm as it’s been business as usual milking and sowing. We have one employee so social distancing hasn’t been an issue.

It has however changed things at home with Charlotte not attending school (although I do use it as a threat that I’m an ‘essential worker’). Home schooling has definitely confirmed why I would never be a teacher! Charlotte and I have both preferred house cleaning, cooking and farm jobs over school work!

Working at GV Health has been challenging, exhausting and rewarding. The initial start of Covid 19 in Victoria has brought many changes to our health systems and we have had to adapt quickly to the changing environment. Setting up a designated Covid Ward and moving the Surgical Ward to a section of the Rehabilitation Ward, which included staff training in new area and the many training sessions we were already running in regards to Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), infection control, hand hygiene etc... Covid-19 has also brought with it multiple changes to our every day routines and practices as Health Practitioners, which has also impacted on patients and their families/visitors due to visitor and visiting hour restrictions.
We have had to prepare for the ‘worst case scenario’ of potential European like Covid patient numbers and that initially had a big impact on the anxiety levels of all hospital staff (not knowing what was going to come through the doors). The positives are many and because Australia/Victoria hasn’t initially had big numbers of unwell Covid patients it has allowed our Health Service to get good protocols and guidelines in place in case of another peak period over the winter months.

It has been good to catch up with Rotarians on Zoom meetings and it sounds like we will be able to have meetings again in the not too distant future.

TO FINISH WITH A SMILE
A man went to his psychiatrist and said, "Every time I drink my coffee, I get a stabbing pain in my right eye," The psychiatrist said, "Well, have you tried taking the spoon out?"
