CHAIRMAN - Geoff Austin

  • Welcome guest Lana visiting her daughter and granddaughters for a few months (from Canada)

GUEST SPEAKER - Kim Carter - The Murks

  • Grew up in Melbourne
  • The Arts were encouraged growing up, lots of instruments in the family household
  • Became obsessed with music around the age of 10 yrs
  • Grew up learning the flute and saxophone and then later moved into singing
  • Parents were very supportive and encouraging
  • Went to Uni to study the Arts and found ‘My People’
  • Settled into married life and the creative life faded into the past for a while rearing two children
  • Moved to Numurkah in 2004
  • Working as a High Schoolteacher teaching music
  • Didn't have the confidence or felt the skills to sing
  • The creativity slowly started to return as country life and relaxing took over
  • Numurkah Singers was a big part of that
  • Squish Davis, Jamie and Tim Watson, Kim met as the cast of Godspell and then formed the band The Murks
  • Jamie's music inspired Kim to write the lyrics to the music
  • Started hosting ‘Open Mic’ sessions to start playing to the public
  • Gave the group the confidence to then start playing in Pubs locally and regionally, then in Melbourne
  • Put enough songs together to record an EP, then JJJ played two songs on the radio
  • In 2013 Jamie quit the band to move to Melbourne, they went through a stage with a new band member without success
  • Started being a ‘covers’ band without Jamie for 4 years
  • The band took a break for a few years
  • Daughter Ruby was an acoustic guitarist and joined the band at 18 years old
  • Started writing again
  • COVID hit and venues were shut down so there was no avenue for performing
  • Squish started her Masters degree and Ruby had a major car accident so another pause on the band
  • Kim then took up the guitar
  • 2023 saw the regrouping of the band and started song writing again. Kim started writing and Bailey the bass player (in Melbourne)
  • Wrangler Studios in Melbourne 2024 to record an album ‘Storms Are Closing In’
  • Album released in October 2025 at the Grain Store in Nathalia
  • The Numurkah Ukele Club were invited to the launch as a support band
  • Album on Spotify, Apple Music, Youtube, Bandcamp
  • Hard to make money as a professional musician
  • The main thing has been the friendship and relationships with each other
  • You are never too old to do what you love!
